About Air Arctic

Bill Thompson

Bill Thompson - Director of Operations

As an enterprising young University of Alaska collegian, Bill financed his aviation education by purchasing a Piper J4 and hiring out for flight training and "tail-dragger" endorsement training.   Over the years, he continued his Interior and Arctic specialization with stints flying with reknowned Alaska flight services such as Tanana Air Service, Frontier Flying Service and Brooks Range Aviation.  Seasonal flying with Air Arctic afforded Bill the time and opportunity to earn his twin-engine float rating and spend a winter in the U.S. Virgin Islands flying turbine, twin-engine Otters.  The Far North called him back however, and he spent some time in Kingair medivac operations before signing on permanently with Air Arctic. While not piloting the skies of Alaska's Arctic, training, or engaged in the myriad adminstrative responsibilies associated with his position, Bill develops and manages his real estate empire, reads avidly, and creates pottery.

Director of Maintenance, Karl Braun

Karl Braun - Director of Maintenance

Karl has been an institution in Interior and Arctic aviation since the early 90's.  He has made his mark as a pilot, mechanic, and aviation entrepreneur holding positions of Director of Operations, Chief Pilot and Director of Maintenance through the years.  Kristy Braun is the real source of Karl's superpowers.  Mrs. Braun is a musical prodigy, playing to international audiences, political dignitaries, and the faithful at Zion Lutheran.  Karl, along with his wife Kristy and newborn daughter, are run by a kennel of 5 commercial sleddogs.  A true renaissance man, Karl manufactures biofuel to keep his carbon footprint small, develops real estate to keep his himself busy in in his ample "free time."

Darren Young

Darren Young - Chief Pilot

Wow.  This an impressive fellow.  A real pilot's pilot.  After a career in the United States Air Force that took him around the globe, often flying dignitaries in the C9, Darren headed north to Alaska.  He was indoctrinated into Alaska bush flying while based in the remote village of Kaltag.  Here he honed his skills flying routes throughout Western Alaska in all types of conditions.  Since joining Air Arctic, his skill and leadership have shone brightly and he's a wonderful asset to the organization.

Pete Haggland

Pete Haggland - Pilot

Pete is one of our many talented pilots; however, he stands out from the rest for his recent recognition. Pete received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recently during the Aviation North Expo banquet.  This FAA award recognizes aviation careers of fifty years or more.

In the aviation world Pete has worn the hat of bush pilot, charter pilot, commuter pilot and A & P mechanic.   His aviation career began at the age of 14 when he began doing light aircraft maintenance, under the supervision of other mechanics. It continues today as he flies and maintains a variety of personal aircraft along with flying with Air Arctic.

He enjoys searching for antique aircraft to restore, even flying exotic equipment to Amnuk Island in his C1 aircraft to search for World War II vintage flighters. He's also been known to load the aircraft with family and friends, flying all to Oshkosh for the big airshow.
